Drumming, Song and Dance Workshop in Senegal, West Africa
Moctar 'Mockoulo' Sawane is offering a wonderful workshop in Abene, Senegal this winter guaranteed to refresh and enliven an understanding of the African drum and dance expression.
26 January - 9 February 2010
Join us in the rich musical culture of the Casamance region, in the beautiful beachside village Abene. Immerse yourself in sunshine and rhythm and enjoy great food shared from a communal bowl. Be part of the celebrations as we play drums, sing and dance by the fire. Feel free and open your eyes to another world!
Classes will run for 2 sessions a day in djembe, dundun and song from Mockoulo Sawane, and traditional African dance by an inspirational local woman. There will be time between classes to do as you please: chill, visit the beach or the sacred baobab tree; and in the evenings you are welcome to see frequent performances (including Mockoulo’s band) and join the reggae parties.
We will have 2 days without lessons to take a trip to Ziguinchor - the main town of Casamance - where we will stay a night with Mockoulo’s family, and another day off to do/see something different.
Provided in the cost: return flights to Banjul (The Gambia), airport transfers, all meals, accommodation based on 2 sharing, and 50 hours of tuition.
Mockoulo’s style and range of musicianship is thrilling to hear and watch. A versatile drum master, he has a vast repertoire of traditional rhythms and songs. He has gained a reputation for the clarity and humour in which he delivers his classes, as well as the energy he brings to performance.
To book your place on this exciting 2-week workshop, get in touch for a booking form or with any questions. You are asked to pay a non-refundable deposit of £200 and a further £1,000 will be due later.
